The CEO of Al Giant, Desi, claims that Wikipedia is “very obvious to be prejudiced” and aims to provide a “neutral and unbiased: Rival to Wikipedia

Aravind Srinivas isn’t too happy with how Wikipedia keeps things neutral, and he’s suggesting that people check out some other options that don’t lean one way or the other. Elon Musk is also throwing in his two cents about Wikipedia’s focus on DEI (that’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and is telling his fans to maybe hold off on giving them money for now. But the folks at the Wikimedia Foundation are saying, “Whoa, hold up!” They’re explaining that all that cash is being put to good use, making sure everyone feels welcome and that the whole thing keeps running smoothly.

Aravind Srinivas, who’s a big cheese at a place called Perplexity AI, has some issues with Wikipedia playing it straight down the middle. He posted on this site X, which used to be Twitter, saying something like, “You know what, it’s pretty obvious Wikipedia has its own opinions.” And then he went on to say, “I’d back anyone trying to make something else like it, but, you know, fairer and more balanced.”

The conversation about Wikipedia having some biases here and there has been going on for a while, with a bunch of people throwing around the idea that there should be some cooler, more balanced options out there. And you know who jumped into the chat with a wild idea? Elon Musk, the big cheese of Tesla. Last year, he said he’d drop a cool billion if they changed the name of Wikipedia to ‘Dickipedia’ for at least 12 whole months. And guess what? He’s still down for it!

Here’s what the big cheese at Perplexity AI said:

“Honestly, Wikipedia’s got a bit of a bias going on. If you’re keen to cook up something different that’s more balanced, hit me up! We can totally use Perplexity’s cool tools to make it happen. Just keep in mind, it’s a mammoth task, so you’d need to be all in for the long haul,” Srinivas posted.

Elon Musk’s “Wikipedia request” to his followers

expressed disapproval of the Wikimedia Foundation’s expenditures on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in December 2024 and urged his supporters to cease making donations to the nonprofit organization that runs Wikipedia.

Musk’s call went out in a post on a platform where he’s got a whopping 210 million fans. He basically said, “Cut it out by donating to Wikipedia unless they start playing fair with their editing,” and he was talking back to some right-wing peeps on TikTok called “Libs of TikTok.” These folks had shared a pie chart that showed a chunky 29% of Wikipedia’s big ol’ $177 million budget for the next couple of years was going toward things like “equity” and “safety & inclusion.” So, it’s like he’s telling everyone to hold their cash until the website starts treating everyone the same in how they let people edit their stuff.

This amounts to $51.7 million, according to the Wikimedia Foundation, with $20.5 million (11.6%) going toward safety and inclusion and $31.2 million (17.6%) going toward equality. Infrastructure receives $86.1 million (48.7%) of the budget, which is the greatest amount. Effectiveness comes in second with $39.2 million (22.2%). The charitable organization explained that “supporting equity represents the second largest part of our programmatic work, with grants and Movement support representing the majority of the budget within the equity goal.”
