Just one month into his job, 50-year-old Brian Niccol, who left Chipotle Mexican Grill to join Starbucks in September 2023, was also given a $5 million sign-on bonus, according to corporate documents.
Brian Niccol, the CEO of Starbucks Corporation, received an incredible $96 million in pay last year, just four months after joining the massive coffee retailer. He defeated industry titans like Apple’s Tim Cook and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, who each earned about $75 million in the previous year.
Around ninety-four per cent of Niccol’s profits were derived from stock awards, the bulk of which were conditioned on performance indicators and the remainder of which vested over a three-year period. According to business documents, Niccol, 50, who transferred from Chipotle Mexican Grill to Starbucks in September 2023, was also given a $5 million sign-on bonus within a month of starting work.
In its filing, the business said, “Brian Niccol is a highly sought-after, effective leader with a proven track record,” according to Bloomberg.
The many benefits that Brian Niccol gets at Starbucks
Following a string of declining sales, Starbucks fired its former CEO, Laxman Narasimhan, and Niccol’s entrance came after a difficult time. Niccol was handed a large contract and tasked with revitalising the coffee business. One concession that has garnered notice is that he was not obliged to move to the company’s headquarters in Seattle.
Rather, the business agreed to pay for his personal travel, temporary accommodation, and the use of a corporate plane for his 1,600-kilometer drive from his home in California to Seattle.
Niccol has a history of using unusual work arrangements. He secured a similar agreement when serving as Chipotle’s CEO in 2018, and soon after taking over, he oversaw the company’s move from Denver, Colorado, to California.
Niccol’s entire yearly compensation package, according to Bloomberg, is $113 million, placing him in the top 20 highest-paid CEOs globally. A basic income of $1.6 million (about Rs 13.4 crore), possible cash incentives of $3.6 million to $7.2 million, and stock awards of up to $23 million are also part of his pay.
