Barbara Corcoran is a well-known flamboyant spitfire who doesn’t mind voicing her opinions, particularly on “Shark Tank.”
However, Corcoran’s level of extroversion is not a prerequisite for business success. To be more precise, Corcoran stated in a recent Instagram post on Tuesday that an introvert and an extrovert are essential for decision-making in every successful organization.
The real estate expert explains how Esther Kaplan, her initial business partner at the Corcoran Group, was an “extreme introvert” and how she distributed the organization’s delegates according to whose skills suited whose tasks.
“I did all the categories—the recruiting, the sales, the marketing—everything that a great extrovert naturally does well,” Corcoran said. “And she handled everything that I was unable to accomplish, including the money, systems, control, and legal work. “And we were amazing as a team.”
In leadership, Corcoran described the mix of introverts and extroverts as an “unbeatable combination.”
The “Shark Tank” star revealed in an Instagram video from September of last year that she nearly didn’t bring Kaplan on at first because of how reserved she was, but then saw how well-organized she was after taking a peek inside her purse.
She had the most meticulous and organized filing system I had ever seen, with partitions labeled inside her purse. With such a sharp mind, I knew I wanted my business in her hands,” Corcoran said. “I immediately created a position for her and expressed my eagerness to mentor her and teach her everything she needed to know about selling.”
The duo managed the Corcoran Group together until 2000 when Pamela Liebman succeeded Kaplan and Corcoran as president and CEO of the company.
