Amazon AWS CEO: Resign if you’re unwilling to return to the office

One of Amazon’s top executives defended the newly introduced and contentious 5-day-per-week office policy on Thursday, suggesting that those who disagree with it can find opportunities elsewhere. At an all-hands meeting for AWS, unit CEO Matt Garman shared that nine out of ten employees he has spoken to support the policy, which is set to begin in January, according to a transcript reviewed by Reuters.

Garman implied that employees who don’t wish to follow the policy are free to leave.

“If some people don’t perform well in that setting and choose not to, that’s okay—there are other companies they can work for,” Garman stated. “When we strive to achieve real innovation on exciting products, I haven’t witnessed us succeed without being physically present.”

The policy has sparked dissatisfaction among many Amazon employees, who argue that commuting is a waste of time and point out that independent data doesn’t support the claimed benefits of working from the office.

Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, announced last month that the company would switch to a five-day workweek in order to “invent, collaborate, and be connected.” Previously, Amazon has enforced a three-day workweek.

A number of previously noncompliant employees were informed that they were “voluntarily resigning” and had their access to corporate networks blocked.

Unlike many of its tech contemporaries, like Google, Microsoft, and Meta, which have two- to three-day in-office policy, Amazon, the second-largest private employer in the world behind Walmart, has taken a tougher stance on returning to work.

“I’m honestly very excited about this change,” Garman said. “I understand not everyone feels the same,” he added, emphasizing that achieving the company’s goals is challenging with the current requirement of only three days in the office.

A spokesperson for Amazon mentioned that she did not have a comment at the moment.
