Oshiwara native Ashfaque Chunawala, 37, has overcome adversity and risen from low beginnings to become a prosperous businessman. Chunawala’s story, which began in 2004 with a meager salary of Rs 1,500 as a retail store attendant, is a testament to tenacity and drive.
Chunawala supported his family by dropping out of school after Class X and working in various occupations for almost ten years before landing a position as manager at a clothing and beauty store. Even with these advancements, he was still pushed to pursue better possibilities by rising financial pressure and a persistent sense of unrealized potential.
His fortunes changed in 2013 when he discovered a rising ride-hailing app offering flexible earning opportunities. Chunawala joined as a part-time driver, acquired a car through the company’s initiative, and embarked on a dual career path. Balancing his store duties with driving, he gradually increased his income, earning Rs 35,000 from the store and an additional Rs 15,000 per month as a driver.
With his sister’s help, Chunawala was able to grow his business and buy a second car. By exercising sound financial management, he was able to obtain a bank loan of Rs 10 lakh, which he used to buy three more cars and expand his fleet. Chunawala persevered in the face of difficulties, including staff turnover and operational setbacks during the COVID-19 lockout, gradually growing his fleet to 400 cars through reinvestment and calculated borrowing.
As he considered his journey, Chunawala underlined his dedication to bringing stability and work opportunities to several families. “I also work to provide drivers with the freedom to follow their dreams without worrying about money.
Chunawala’s commitment and perseverance have garnered him recognition from Uber, the ride-sharing app he is still affiliated with, as a leading first-generation entrepreneur. His drivers participate in intensive training programs lasting 15–30 days to cultivate professionalism and align with the company’s standards.
Looking ahead, Chunawala hopes to add 500 more vehicles to his fleet, demonstrating his unwavering drive for success in the cutthroat ride-hailing market.
Ashfaque Chunawala’s path serves as an example of how perseverance and strategic vision can turn hardship into success, encouraging others to follow their entrepreneurial dreams with bravery and conviction.
